Henry was born in Accra, Ghana on 24th January 1941. He was one of eight children.
After school he studied engineering at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, graduating in 1965.
Henry worked as an engineer for several years, but in 1971 he joined the Bank of Ghana as a manager in the Development Finance Division. In this position he attended many courses, and in 1975 was given study leave to go to IMEDE to do an MBA. He regarded his year in Lausanne as having expanded his horizons beyond his wildest dreams.
After IMEDE Henry returned to banking, but in 1983 he resigned to set up his own rice farm. In his opinion there was no future in working for other people since, in those days, there was no pension for people working in the private sector. This was to prove prophetic, as he was later appointed to help create a pension scheme for the working people of Ghana.
In 1986 he joined SSNIT (Social Security and National Insurance Trust). Under his twelve year leadership it grew from being a small, struggling organisation to the giant, internationally respected social and financial institution that it is today.
Over the years Henry was on the board of various companies in the banking, oil and construction fields, in some instances as chairman, but the one that brought him particular pleasure was the Achimota School Board. He had attended the school himself, and was happy to serve the school that had been so important in his own education.
In 1998 Henry retired from SSNIT and concentrated on one of his pet interests, namely solar energy. Together with some friends he formed a company called SOLARCO, and spent most of his time adapting and installing equipment which used solar power. He also travelled widely giving lectures, including to the World Bank in Washington DC.
A man admired for his humility, integrity and generosity, Henry’s happiest moments were those spent surrounded by his family: Mabel his wife, his four children Maria, Perry, Sandra and Rita, and five grandchildren.
Henry died peacefully on February 13th 2009 following a long illness.
